Motability

The Motability scheme was set up to provide an affordable transport solution for people with disabilities.

Who is eligible for the Motability scheme?

There is only one requirement for eligibility, which is that you must be in receipt of the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement. If you satisfy this requirement, you are eligible under the scheme to lease a new car, powered wheelchair or scooter. You will not be required to undergo any credit checks or means tests: simply decide on one of two options, choose your car from over 3,000 on offer, and we'll do the rest!

If you don't drive, the scheme enables you to nominate up to two drivers (at least one aged 21 or over), and parents or carers of children aged three and over are also welcome to apply.

Motability scheme options

Option 1: contract hire

This is by far the most popular choice, with around 95% of Motability customers choosing contract hire. This is an "all-inclusive" package, with insurance, personal accident cover, servicing, maintenance, RAC breakdown assistance, tyre and windscreen replacement all thrown in. The only additional cost to you is for fuel.

The hire period is three years (five years for wheelchair accessible vehicles), at the end of which you are eligible for a new car.

Many of the most popular car adaptations are available under the contract hire option at no additional cost, so please let us know if you need, for example, wheelchair stowage or an easy release handbrake and we'll be happy to advise you.

Option 2: hire purchase

With hire purchase, you have the option to buy the car at the end of the three years. After agreeing a purchase price with us, we will order your car and arrange delivery, but you will be responsible for organising your own insurance, breakdown recovery, tax, servicing and maintenance.

We keep you updated with progress on your vehicle, and if any additional work is required we will always discuss our recommendations with you as soon as possible, and ask for your agreement to go ahead.
